HOME FOR THE BLIND

   Home for the Blind has been started on 25.03.1988. The sanctioned strength of the Home is 25. The present strength is 18 persons. Male above the age of 20 are eligible for admission. Preference will be given to the Puducherry native people. Apart from this any Indian can be admitted. A person with total absence of sight or visual acuity not exceeding 6/60 or 20/200 (snellen) in the better eye with correcting lenses or limitation of the field of vision substanding an angle of 20 degrees or worse. The blind person has to apply in form I with a medical certificate in form II. The Welfare Officer of the Home should verify the application and certificate and after proper enquiry can admit a person in the Home. There should be no criminal record about him in the court of Law. He should not be mentally retarded or suffering from any infectious diseases. His annual income should not exceed Rs.2000/- The person who likes to discharge from the Home should inform the Welfare Officer in advance and should leave. The persons who are cured of permanently of their sight can be discharged. The inmates are provided with food and shelter. Special meals are provided once in a month and on festival days. During illness they are treated at the P.H.C. or at G.H. A pocket money of Rs.2/- is provided every month to meet out petty expenses.

            The Home is situated at a rented building at 1/137, Lawspet Main Road, Lawspet, Puducherry-8.

            The inmates are given training in mat-weaving and chair canning with the guidance of instructors. Re. 3/- for one mat and Rs. 5/- for one frame of chair is given as labour charge for each inmate. Every year annual tour is conducted to the inmates of Home for entertainment.
