HOME FOR ORTHOPAEDICALLY HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

The home for Orthopaedically Handicapped Children was established on 1.1.1981, synchronizing with the commencement of the celebration of International year of the disabled persons.

           The Home for orthopaedically handicapped children is the only Government Institution of its kind in Puducherry. The main aim of the scheme is to provide education and treatment to the helpless, physically handicapped children. The inmates are provided in the free boarding and lodging.

 

 

     This home is now functioning in a rented building with all facilities.The children are admitted in nearby Schools and they are completing 10th std. in the home. They are given Vocal and Instrumental music by trained teacher. They are participating in programmes conducted by Education Department, Kamban Kazhagam, Bal Bhavan and AIR and has secured prizes and certificates.

           For recreation they play throw ball, carom board and cricket. They are provided with Televisions and once in a year they are taken to educational tours. Annual day is celebrated every year.

           The Staff Nurse gives the inmates care, when they have ailment and during emergency they are taken to nearby Primary Health Centres or to General Hospital as per the need. Their parents, when they visit the Institution are given advises regarding the care, they have to give, to their children, when they are with them. Regular meeting with them, are conducted.

            Both Tamil and English newspapers are purchased. One library, with enough books is also maintained.

            The children are supplied with enough prosthetic and orthotic appliances. The inmates are sent to undergo surgery with the consent of their parents. The department has purchased a Swaraj Mazda Van, 32 seater for the transportation of the inmates to Schools, artificial limb center, General Hospital, P.H.C. and to other places whenever necessary.

            Regarding admission, they are admitted once in a year, during the month of June. A wide publicity is given in leading newspapers during the months of April / May. The Clinical Board makes selection of inmates by direct interview. Likewise continuance and discharge are also made by Clinical Board only.

           The children's progress is regularly reviewed. The Welfare Officer of the Home is attending the Parent / Teacher meetings and their progress is discussed with Principal of the Schools and with Teachers.

Apart from this, Evening Tuition Classes, Tailoring Classes and Craft Class are also arranged for imparting Vocational Training to the students.

  On the whole, the inmates are getting all the facilities in this Home and the services are rendered to them throughout the year with the fullest co-operation of all the regular and part time staffs.
