INCEPTION:
The
Home for Mentally Retarded children was incepted on 8.1.1997. The rules for internal management and responsibilities
was notified vide G.O. Ms. No. 9/93-Wel (SW) dated 10.02.1993 of Welfare
Secretariat. The Home now is functioning at a rented building at No.17, 9th Cross Rainbow Nagar, Puducherry-11
with contact Phone No.0413-2211067.
AIM:
The aim
is to prevent the effects of Handicap.
To
provide a sense of security while the child has to be away from home.
To
inculcate personal and social readiness.
To
provide academic readiness.
To
develop co-curricular activities and bring out the in born talents.
FEATURES:
This
Home taken full time care of the mentally retarded children. The
children are provided boarding and lodging facilities at free of
cost.
The mentally retarded children are provided psychiatric treatment, if necessary as recommended by the senior specialist,
Government Hospital, Puducherry. Monthly medical chek up by Paediatrician is
carried out for all the children.
The children
are taught good personal habits of
cleanliness, pre-social habits like sharing,
co-operating with other children, waiting for one's own turn in group
situations, respecting others rights, participating in
group activities etc.
They are being taught usage of good words and expression in regular use
at home; sound discrimination skill; visual discrimination skill; habit of
handling of books properly; acquiring of basic pre-number concepts like
big/small; thick/thin; tall/short; first/last; etc. developing cognitive
skills like sorting, classification, seriation, sequential thinking,
problem solving, reasoning, and so on.
Play materials, television, Radio, Taperecorder are also used to make
them understand happanings, listen to music and enjoy.
ADMISSION CRITERIA:
The
sanctioned strength of the Home in 25. The mentally retarded children of Indian Nationality
shall be admitted to this home on application made to the Directorate
of social Welfare, through this Home. Preference shall be given to the children
of Union Territory of Puducherry.
The clinical board constituted with following officials with select
the mentally retarded children for admission into this Home.
1.
The Director of Social Welfare, Puducherry - Chairman
2.
The Medical Superintendent, G.H., Puducherry - Member
3.
The Senior Specialist in Psychiatry, G.H., Puducherry - Member
4.
The Deputy Director in charge of the Scheme - Member Secretary.
The
Clinical Board will certify the nature and extent of deformity and prescribe
the course of training to be given at the Home. The course of training
to be given at the Home. the clinical
board will also specify the period of stay of individual cases.
The minimum age of the mentally retarded child for
admission is 5 Years, while the maximum age is 17 years. The child
after attaining 17 years of age or completion of period
prescribed by the clinical board will be handed over with their parents.
